Up until now the Ford Mustang has always been designed within North America, but with all of Ford’s lineup now being designed for global platforms, that won’t be the case for the next generation Mustang coming in 2014, according to Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president for global product development.
For the past three years Ford has used input from its design studios around the world to generate styling ideas for its new vehicles. “It is a common process we [now] use on every vehicle,” Kuzak told Automotive News. This means that the design studios from Europe, Australia and other regions will produce ideas for the look of the next generation Mustang alongside Ford’s U.S. studio. “When we embark on a new product, particularly one that is all new, it involves all of the studios. Then J [Mays] and the design team pick the best of those themes,” Kuzak continued.
So what does this mean for the future of the Mustang? If Ford really does intend to put its legendary pony car on a global platform, we could see the very first mass-produced Mustang with an independent rear suspension.
